I just returned from my first real vacation in quite some time and boy was I way overdue. Rosie and I flew out to Boulder CO. and stayed with our daughter Shannon and her fiancée’ Aaron for a week. The trip was a road trip that was adventure packed and encompassed several State and Federal Parks, camping, a trike race and some 2100 miles logged on the rental van. (Click any of the pictures for a larger view). This by no means is a diary of the adventure but just a few of the highlights and Read the rest of this entry »

My first real adventure out in the ocean with a Kayak. Dennis and I set out from Newcastle in the back channel and we paddled out to Odione Point outside the harbor. It was a great time and wonderful experience. I used a loaner tandem style kayak, an Old Town Otter Read the rest of this entry »

The winds of change are constantly blowing and things evolve. It wasn’t that long ago when people would only use an alias for email and chat, and simply shopping online was a scary proposition. Fast forward to today where people freely place all there information online Read the rest of this entry »

I completed my first official 5k this past weekend at the Lebanon Community Festival in Lebanon, Maine. The race was a benefit for a local family fighting cancer and was well attended. My guess is there some 30-40 people Read the rest of this entry »

I guess I need to be honest with myself, my friends, and my family. I am a juicer. Everything I accomplish from here on out needs to have a tiny asterisk beside it. You see it all started with a little apple juice and occasional orange juice and then cranberry, mostly from concentrates Read the rest of this entry »

I was offered an option of last minute ticket to a Wilco show at the Capitol Theater in Concord NH last night. I had heard some of Wilco’s songs and read rave things about the bands live shows, even seeing them referred to as “Americas Best Live Rock & Roll Act”. So I accepted the offer to hang with some great friends, make some memories and see what this Wilco hoopla was all about. Read the rest of this entry »

This past Saturday my parents completed their journey of being together forever. I took advantage of the great weather afforded and marched up the summit of Mt Washington with my snowshoes, setting them free together at the upper end of Jacobs Ladder on the Cog Railway. In case you didn’t know Jacob’s Ladder is the ladder to heaven and Read the rest of this entry »

The past few months I have logged over 500 miles riding my bike on a stationary trainer, looking to stay fit and keep the winter pounds from packing on. One way of passing the time was watching documentaries by streaming them from Netflix (on a free trial). Slim the waistline and expand the mind…was my theory. I was also astounded by what I learned about food, health and how the body works. I invite you to partake in theses movies and make your own conclusions for you and your family. Well… It’s the middle of winter and to avoid the ominous potential of expanding the waistline with inactivity I have made a habit of eating better, visiting the gym, getting regular bike rides in on the trainer and a few jogs here and there. So far this year I have lost 20 pounds, getting me nearly back to September of last year weight wise. This is all encouraging and I hope the weight keeps dropping as the intensity keeps rising.
In an effort to have goals and make fun of the workouts I have thought of raising the bar and making them Training. I am currently looking to enter a Duathlon where I can - run / bike / run. This differs from a Triathlon where one swims, bikes, and runs. The swimming would be the most challenging for me, Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t want to jinx everyone in New England but perhaps it’s too late. I have been wanting to get up to the mountains and do some Snowshoeing but the weather just has been so uncooperative. Lately we have hardly gotten any snow, leaving me to think that to head-up a mountain trail would require crampons for ice versus snowshoes.
My take is if we are going to have some cold weather, give us enough snow so we can fully enjoy it. Locally the fields and tote roads are mostly bare and have been so it seems most of the winter except for a brief spell . You can’t even cross country ski or sled. So mother nature if your reading, warm it up and start spring or give us a little bit of snow so we can have some fun…

I recently had peculiar set of events leave me with a single AD Server placing it into a UNC Rollback state. I replaced the server with a back-up image, tried restoring the System State in DSRM, no luck. Every avenue I tried left the system in the same state upon reboot. After hours and many failed attempts this was the last remedy for me…
Restored the Image of the Server (to put the system back to square one) then restored the system state in DSRM, this did NOT work (still in UNC) , opened REGEDIT and deleted the key
“Dsa Not Writable” under “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters
Upon reboot the Active Directory services started and netlogon and the balance came up as expected. Obviously reg edits are at your own peril. I couldn’t find any work around solutions on the web other than rebuilding Active Directory from scratch and that really isn’t a solution at all in my book. So if your faced with a similar problem give this a shot, let me know if it helps you too.
The environment is operating in mixed mode and this was on a Win2K server SP4.

Somedays we are met with extreme challenges that push us to the brink. That was the kind of week I have had…worked a twenty-eight hour shift at work at one point fearing the absolute worst, a complete network rebuild. When a solution comes through and actually works, bringing me back to whole again, placing the world back in balance. It is hard to explain how it feels to be so bleak and then to suddenly turn a 180. I am not claiming smarts or luck, but just stating the simple satisfaction of particular series events that netted a result that was euphoric… a triumph of sorts…Eureka!!

I am once again doing the ride for Breathe NH
This is the 25th year for the tour that has so many wonderful volunteers and has done so much for fighting such a horrible disease.
The ride will start in Portsmouth and travel down to Hampton and along the New Hampshire and Maine cost ending in Qgunquit. I did the ride last year and raised nearly one thousand dollars! This years route is 56 miles
You make the donation and I will do the work. Help put an end to Lung Disease. If you would like to ride with me or volunteer that would be great too.!
Here is my Donation Page ! http://www.breathenh.org/Page.aspx?pid=692&frsid=267

The Internet as we now it is under attack by some in Washington and by many of the providers like cell phone providers, cable companies and others with special interests. These companies are working to pass the Internet Freedom Act, which will allow them to manipulate the the traffic on their networks across the internet. Many free services such as Skype or Hulu directly compete directly against these companies. As an example cable companies were recently ordered that they could NOT inhibit traffic from Hulu a website that streams TV and movies for free. If the Internet Freedom Act passes providers will once again be able to tweak service at will. This will be bad for competition, bad for the consumer, and only benefits theses big companies.
Tell the politicians you to leave the internet open and free to everyone. The Internet Freedom Act is not good, it is simply a catchy name to limit our rights, limit our choices and give innovation the boot. You can go to http://www.savetheinternet.com/ and learn more about why Net Neutrality is a good thing and sign the petition against the Internet Freedom Act. The Internet is what allows us all to communicate openly, The Internet Freedom Act will gag you and your freedom of choice.

I will miss you Mom…
We will all miss you…I know you are still with us in spirit, but that doesn’t make it any easier….
You taught me many lessons through the year’s thanks in part to your stoical patience and unyielding resolve. You made me a better person each day by just being You; even though many times I was too stubborn or naive realize it. I will miss your laughter, stories and hugs and want to thank you for my Life and all the wonderful moments you blessed me with. You will be missed dearly and will live forever in our hearts, memories and in songs.

There is handy application called Stitcher. It allows you to stream radio stations and podcasts straight to your Iphone or computer on demand. This isn’t a novelty on it’s own, but what you can also do it stack your favorite channels to make your own playlist. Stitcher offers many pre-configured channels covering technology, health, news etc. Many of my favorite podcasts from NPR and TWIT were already in there and it is nice to have the opportunity to checkout new ones I was unfamiliar with. Where Stitcher shines is that it doesn’t need to sync to provide any of the content and may be configured and accessed through a single account for the browser and or Iphone.
Drawbacks….if you listen to a show and leave the application it has to start your show from the beginning, it doesn’t remember your place..this isn’t good for long shows. Upside….Free www.stitcher.com
Also of mention on the application front for streaming music is SomaFM. Stream music via browser or iphone with several commercial free channels…Two of my favorites are Boot Liquor and Covers. This is great for when you just want something a little outside the mainstream and here is the link http://somafm.com/listen/ If you hear something on the channels you like you can bookmark it for buying on itunes later. The stream quality will change depending if your phone is on WiFi or Edge so you always get the best quality with minimal buffering. Drawbacks….on Iphone the channel will play for 20-30 min and you need to press play again. I presume this is to reassure SomaFM your still listening and they are not wasting bandwidth. SomaFM is commercial free and is listener supported.
Pandora is a new kind of radio that plays only music you like. Pandora works via a browser and Iphone application that allows you to make your own station(s). Simply enter an artist or a song and it will serve you that artist or song along with similar tunes. You can vote each song up or down if you like and skip it if you hate it. This is a great way to experience artists you have never herd of and the tunes served typically do fit the profile well. You can see information about the artist and bio when the songs playing. Pandora is commercial free and allows you to save many personal channels. The application and service is free. http://www.pandora.com/#/stations/create/
So when you are tired of the same old playlist, step outside the box and expand your horizons with these great browser and Iphone applications.

I did it…purchased an indoor trainer for my bicycle. My goal was to have that extra option to exercise and stay in shape as the weather turns wintery. I also want to maintain and increase if possible my cycling speed and capacity for riding next year.

The Trainer I purchased was a Kinetic Trainer, by Kurt and the model is the Road Machine. In looking through Read the rest of this entry »
