A really interesting photo, I would like to think it is Photoshop work but apparently it isn’t. Do you suppose the chicks are dipped or sprayed? What does the help wanted add say for this place?

  • Well I saw last week on the news we only had about an inch to go to set the record for the wettest summer in history. With Fridays shower and the upcoming weeks forecast the records going to be shattered easily. It gets so depressing…rain, rain, mow, glimpse of sun…..rain, rain, mow, glimpse of sun. I live in Maine not Washington.
I suppose the good news is we haven't had all the rain in a major downpour so flooding hasn't been too much of an issue, I am just so tired of the grey drizzle.
At this point we must be on the backside of this stuff right? If you read this do a "Sun Dance" (as apposed to a rain dance), if enough of us do it perhaps we can salvage the last couple weeks of summer.

  • The Breaks on Brakes

Well…it had to happen…after 115,000 miles i had to put a set of brakes on the front of the Beetle. I am not to upset though for 134,000 miles it has been a good car, and M & D auto in Lebanon does very good work at a fair price.

I had been babying the brakes for a while saving the pennies for, pads and rotors and some other bits was $226.00. If  I can roll another 100,000 in this i will be happy.

My 1999 beetle has been a great car and i still get about 411 miles on a 12.7 gal tank. It’s sporty but not a sports car, and roomy but not a wagon. I still look back at how i used to think “I will never drive one of those”, I only wish i had started driving them sooner. Keeping my fingers crossed…

    APA – Fall Tri-Cup Champions !!

Well this past weekend we participated in the fall Tri-Cup championship. The road to this competition was a bit long considering the team placed in the lower middle of the pack for the session. We were lucky to have our number pulled from a hat and win a wildcard spot that gave us a ticket to the play-offs, but we had to win two matches on the road to even get to the show.

We rolled soundly throughout the play-offs and arrived in Plastow NH Saturday with great expectations. Our first match was against TJ’s Team, the team in our league that won 1st place. We thankfully got to play in the backroom out of the way of the crowds, winning in five matches with it coming down to the last game, were Tom Rose gained control and had it quite in hand throughout.

The next match was against a group of peruvian indians whom didn’t speak english. They played well and had low handicaps as a team with three fives and the rest threes. We jumped out to a quick lead with I and Tom winning, then Shane and Dennis dropped placing us a pre-announced sudden death rack.

One rack for the money and the chance to go to the State Championship. Jeff James was our six going against their three. Things looked to be going as planned until Jeff had a miscue followed by a slight mis-step in position, leaving a difficult shot which he missed. With only two balls left, his opponent smashed a shot and was rewarded with a crazy APA bounce. Then he had a fantastic stroke shot on ball to get in shape for a shot on the eight. When I saw his stroke I thought “sandbagger” and figured it certainly was over. He lined up the shot on the eight and shot with bottom english, scratching in the corner providing us the victory, the title and $2,200.00 in cash!. It was an exciting end to a long day. So we are off to the State Finals this summer and a shot to win our way to the Nationals in Vegas!!

    Dented Keg – Fall 2008 – APA Tri-Cup Champions!

According to Dennis this picture captures the moment the team when asked “Who Won It For You?” and they pointed….
Dennis thinks Tom won it for us, Tom thinks I did, Glen says it was himself, Shane and Rose thank the Lord and Geoff thinks its the camera man? – I believe we are Winners and we did it together!! Lets win the States and go to Vegas Baby !!

  • Peanut Graduates – 06/13/08

It’s official, My Peanut is a graduate of Exeter High School.
Wow, how unbelievable my Peanut is out of high school and starting her next chapter in life.
Seems like just yesterday she was born and here she is graduating high school. When Emily was very young not long after she just started walking she put on these skate shoes and would skate back and forth down the hall, with her elbows up like a roller derby queen. It was so darn amazing she could go like she did and so cute. She would go back and forth, back and forth…
Emily we are all so very proud of you and all you’ve accomplished so far. You have become and amazing young woman before our eyes. Remember rafting the Kennebeck River and hanging on for dear life in the front of the boat?

Emily’s 17th birthday we all went to dinner and she demonstrated the proper technique for riding the saddle at the Texas Roadhouse. She has such great technique and the use of the napkin for a cowboy hat was brilliant. yeehaw!
The weather for graduation day could not have been much better warm but not crazy humid. The sportswriter for the Union Leader spoke Mr Joseph Sullivan. His message was enjoy life, be a little crazy, don’t be afraid to take chances, and above all laugh. Of course he did not mean to go physically speeding in a car or dodging trains, but more intellectually let yourself go. He speaks the truth laughter cures many things.

Nick showed for the ceremony and after party before heading back to Rhode Island. I was so glad to see him and catch up what little we could. I had not seen him since the Christmas holiday. I think he grew another 4 inches since then, is that possible? We sure would like to see more of him. What a great looking group…
Grammie was so proud of you and she looked so good. It was hard for her today without Grampie, but we all know he was with us all in spirit and memory and always is. Emily you have you’re whole life before you, I’m so jealous. I want you to always remember and take to heart these simple words….. You are the author of tomorrows memories and those memories are created today. Follow you’re heart, be true to yourself, Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today, Live without regret but don’t regret to live, It takes steady consistent action to impart change, change is good, Work to live, don’t live to work, Live outside the box, and Laugh, Laugh and Laugh again…

Don’t take shit from anyone, Stay current with the new American language (Spanish); vote Democrat; support Unions; Wipe well; If it sounds to good to be true it usually is; Beware of those with nothing to lose, they’ll only lose you’re shit; Marching up the trail of Life you’re bound to get a blister, have moleskin; Take care of you’re stuff; Stay away from lazy men; Enjoy Life’s simple things, there’s so many more; Cook you’re fiddleheads, Men really only want one thing, good men want it all, great men should ask nothing.; Beware of splinters as you slide down the banister of life; Eat healthy foods… We don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change.; Always leave loved ones with loving words, It may be the last time you see them.; You can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.; Money is a lousy way of keeping score.; You can keep going long after you can’t.; It isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others, sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.; Credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.; Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences….

Sometimes when you’re angry you have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give you the right to be cruel.; No matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.; People you care about most in life are sometimes taken from you too soon; Don’t be afraid your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.; The difference between education and experience? Education is when you read the fine print, experience is what you get when you don’t. Alcohol and Drugs only cloud you’re judgment.; Don’t rely on a single source for news, you’ll only get a single point of view; Laugh; Never take yourself too seriously; Be yourself, it’s good enough.; – - Wear Sunscreen.

I think this one sums it all up…….

“The difference between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.” – Tom Bodett

I’m proud of you Emily….OXOXOX – Go Get It Girl!

  • Fiddleheads Awesome, It’s Been Years….

Well Monday night Rose cooked a great meal of burgers, mac & cheese and a salad. The salad had pea pods, tomatoes, carrots, and fresh fiddleheads. Wow fiddleheads? I haven’s seen these in years, not since my dad used to pick and cook them back in Stratham. “Can you eat them raw” I asked her, “sure” Rose said. I’ve personally never had them raw but I like trying new things and my sample tasted really good. So I heaped up the salad and mowed it down. It was excellent, so much so i went back for seconds, particularly the fiddleheads.

Well an hour or so later my stomach began to sour and after our company left I went to bed. It wasn’t very long I was up and headed to the bathroom, then up and down all night. I was so unbelievably nauseous and the diarrhea just wouldn’t stop flowing. I ended up not getting any rest and missing a day of work to recover. I hadn’t been this ill in a very long time.

Today after telling my Mom of my ordeal I find out that my uncle Louis Johnson had eaten raw fiddleheads a couple years ago and had become deathly ill. I’m not sure what happened but the Stadig grapevine didn’t reach me on this one.
Hannaford Supermarkets sold the fiddleheads packaged just like strawberry’s, but i really think they should have put a warning sticker on them to cook them. I did a little research and found this article printed in a couple places that speaks of an outbreak of food poisoning back in 1994 attributed to fiddleheads. It didn’t help that the day I’m sick is also the hottest day of the year so far, super high humidity and almost a 100 degrees.

So beware of the fiddlehead…unless you cook it thoroughly. If you choose to collect you’re own fiddleheads you need to know how to properly identify them since picking the wrong kind can also be cancerous, again see the article link up above. You can also check out this Wikipedia article that explains how some types contain Shikimic Acid. Shikimic Acid is used in pharmaceuticals and is commonly referred to as Shikimate.
So in closing if you would like to make you’re intestines evacuate like the energizer bunny eat you’re fiddleheads raw.

  • I present to you Mr & Mrs John Nelson….. It’s always amazing to see a wonderful couple grow and evolve as they progress down the road of life. John and Chrissy have been dating for something like 8 years (Since they were 15). They are a great couple and are always positive, jovial and outgoing.

They decided that the time had come to tie the knot and did so last Saturday 06/07/08, now i am sure this was done so they never forget their anniversary date but you didn’t hear that from me. The ceremony was fantastic and the weather couldn’t have been much better even though it was sunny and hot, but at least it didn’t rain.

The ceremony took place in Plimouth Massachusetts’s on a bridge over a small swift stream. I had seen several fish moving it the water and thought they were decent sized trout, but later read that they were a form of Herring. The bridge has a significance , John’s father Paul who passed many years ago used to walk John over this very bridge as a baby. There was a picture at the reception showing John in a stroller with his Dad on the very spot. The bridge was decorated in fresh flowers taken from Rick and Rosa’s home and looked amazing. The arrangements looked better than anything you could have purchased.

I guess the story is John met Chrissy at a church outing back when they were like 15. John told Keith “See that girl over there? She keeps staring at me” The rest as they say is history. Below is a picture of John Nelson the groom and his best man Keith Fuller.

Chrissy arrived fashionably late and was accompanied by her father who walked her to the ceremonial bridge. Chrissy looked fabulous! The dress she was wearing was and antique worn by her future mother and law (Mary-Ann Nelson) and future grandmother in law (Gloria McCabe). The whole wedding party looked fantastic, the colors of the bridesmaids dresses really popped.
The ceremony was great with the family all circled around. Prior to and after the ceremony, they had a small trio that played guitar and fiddle with a vocalist. They performed several Irish tunes and fishing songs. The group also accompanied the wedding guests after the ceremony to the Grist Mill for refreshments and a snack while formal pictures were done and we awaited the wedding party. The Grist Mill was a quaint old building with tons of character and a working water wheel.

After the mill everyone went to the Pavilion for the start of the reception. Sean and I took down Bruce and Rob in a game of horseshoes, earning ourselves our first free bear of the day. Sean decided our team name would be team “Drink for Free”. As it turned out we got in another game with Mark and Shane and I had to drink a bit faster since i was starting to back up from all out winnings.

The reception was an awesome time with many different games and prizes. At the reception they had many pictures, yearbooks, a journal of hikes in Utah, and more all displayed. The food was a sandwich buffet that was incredible, and was provided by the same caterer (can’t remember his name) who did the Hoe-down at Rick and Rosa’s last summer. He actually grew up with the McCabe family. The hikes in Zion looked unbelievable.

The reception went well into the night with dancing and activities as you generally find. It was great to see and meet Rose’s extended family like Dottie whom I met for the very first time. Rosemary, Paul and Josh made it up from Atlanta. There are many more people far to many to many to list in this forum. After the reception there was to be another gathering at Grist Mill after all the part stuff was offloaded at Mary-Ann’s home. We had to leave it was already 9pm and as it was we didn’t make it back until after midnight.
It was a wonderful day for a wonderful couple and family. John and Chrissy are planning on going up through Canada and returning back to Salt Lake via a route over the Great Lakes and down through Yellowstone. They are hoping to get in a couple hikes, do some camping and get a little R & R before heading back to work in ten days. Congratulations to the new Mr & Mrs Nelson!!!

Hopefully we will see them later this year when we do a vacation. We hope to go to Colorado to visit Shannon and swing down to Salt Lake for a visit with the Nelson’s.

Here is a link to all the Wedding Pictures….These are unprocessed…more to follow

  • New Pool Install – 05/25/08

Well things didn’t look normal around the pool this Feb, and as the snow pack in the yard reached level with the top of the pool the end of March it was obvious. “Houston We Have A 24′ Problem”
Our pool had a large block of ice in it an no water. I could see air between the ice and the pool wall, this wasn’t normal. As I walked around to the back side I could see there had been a massive failure. I called the insurance company to report a claim hoping they would cover the loss. I also took some pictures to show the damage.

An adjuster came out took one look and said oh yeah it’s gone. Explained that hundreds had failed due to the record snowfall this past winter and said he would be in touch. As it turned out Liberty Mutual would cover it and wrote us a check for replacement.

I priced pools and installers and thought installation should be way less than $1000.00-1650.00. So i started disassembling mine studying how it went together and studying other peoples installs on the net. It looked doable, the ground work was done, why not do it ourselves?

So I purchased some stone dust from down the road and prepared the ground work. I actually filled in the center couple inches since one installer thought it was simply way deep and could have contributed to my initial failure. I also brought a lot of stone dust into the pool edges to build up a large cove at the base of the wall as shown in the instructions. My original installation didn’t have nearly enough based on what I read. Other than that same pool, same location.

We had the assistance of Shane, Rose, Buck on install day. I placed the track and we started unfurling the wall. This is tricky and it’s best to have more than 4 people. I made several dead men hooks with stakes to hold the wall as we went and these worked awesome. In general we followed the directions and all went well I won’t go through all the steps here in this forum but it’s safe to say follow the instructions even if they seem wrong. Emily showed up later in the afternoon and was a huge help getting the uprights and caps in place. It all looked good, except for one minor problem, the skimmer hole landed under the edge of a post. There was no way to move the wall at this point, it must have slid back as we worked it in. I decided I would re-cut the opening since I really had no other options and I wasn’t taking it apart.

We filled the pool about 6 inches and ordered water from a local trucker a couple days later. In the meantime I took some sheet metal and made a sandwich plate shifting and cutting the skimmer hole over in the clear area. I taped my bolts as was done with the wall joint and that all went very well, actually this work stiffened the skimmer area considerably. At this point we could top off the pool which took another 6 hours by hose. – BTW Don’t cut you’re liner until it’s nearly full with water and the liner stretched or you risk losing it.

I think it was later the next day that Shane and Sean had a cribbage game and the looser had to jump in the pool. Based on the pool thermometer the water temp was 57 degrees …ouch. So needless to say the person below was the looser and credited with christening the pool. Last time it was Alex and Christy this time Shane, Hopefully there won’t be another “next time pool christening” for a long time. At least Shane christened it in style.

  • Flooring Project – 04/25/08

Well it’s been years of deciding what to do for our floors, weighing options and preparing budgets. We started simply poly coating our painted floors every year or so to save them, but the polyurethane has started yellowing and face it, cute as the painted tile and painted rugs were, they are still ” PAINTED FLOORS!”

So the stars aligned and we made our buy of the Dupont – Realtouch Elite Flooring – in Sand Hickory. This floor was a wider plank design and had a natural texture versus other products we had seen and although a bit more expensive didn’t require underlayment since it was built in. The installation boards themselves were also larger roughly 14 x 48 and not small individual planks as I had seen by other manufacturers which should make installation easier, faster and in my mind provide a more solid installation when completed.

So we made the buy at our local HD, rented their truck and moved the 57 cases of flooring into the main the room to a climate for a few days. I measured the room from all points checking for break points several times worried about how the board ends land against walls, stairs, and wood stove platform etc. All looked good, no slivers to worry about except maybe the end wall, which i could deal with.

I figured the best place to start would be on the long wall and work our way across, once half way we could move furniture on top of what was laid and do the kitchen and then the balance of living area. In theory I viewed the floor as three zones even though when done it would be one continuous slab of flooring when complete. If trouble arose such as cupping or the floor needed to be separated, I could break the floor near our steps to provide an expansion joint where it would be short and less noticeable . I was concerned on this matter because I hadn’t seen any literature the encompassed our type of installation.

So I got a couple days off and prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. Here are what the floors looked like before..

We moved everything over the left side of the house and prepared. We tore up our old carpet and pad along with 4 million staples used to hold the pad down and hauled it out. During this process we decided it would be best that we paint the walls while the moldings were off, so a quick trip to get the paint and we rolled away. We laid a couple rows of flooring and it looked real good we started to lay out the boards for the next course to check joint alignment and we found none of the boards had an end joint. How could this be? We opened another box laid it out same thing, another box same thing, are you kidding? We opened no less than 8 boxes all the same thing. Defective flooring? Just our luck…so we went to bed tired and pissed.

A awoke early and made tracks to Home Depot to explain my problem of how my house was totally a mess and I couldn’t lay any floor due to the defect. If I was to get more from them did it really have to sit 3 days? Needless to say HD didn’t have anymore flooring in stock in Rochester but Portsmouth had 60 cases. I drove to Portsmouth and explained my dilemma to the clerk. We grabbed a couple cases and opened them up to check them, and sure enough same trouble. The person was dumbfounded as i was and explained the head of flooring would be in in a couple hours. I left my number and noticed in the bright light a shadow and light edge….what?
I saw the clerk had written my number down improperly but left anyway saying I would return after breakfast. I called rose who was still home and asked her to fit a couple of boards together via ends…”Does it have a joint?”I asked, ” Oh my god…yeah” she said.
Wonderful I happy although still aggravated at how I could be so stupid. So i picked up the couple things I needed and returned to lay more floor.

I made it all the way across to halfway by around 6pm. Ryan and Tara stopped by to see our progress and I connected our TV for Survivor and we hung out and had a couple pops. Rose and i could see the new floor coming together as we hoped it would and danced a little to some music videos until way too late.

We awoke and I started where we left off, by moving all the china cabinet stuff out of the kitchen and getting the refrigerator moved out. Later this afternoon we had a group of people coming over to help pick-up the pool table and move it onto the newly laid floor so we could finish the demo and continue the new floor. I bought some casters and made dollies but come to find out it was unnecessary. With the army we had the pool table moved easily, which was a huge relief. I started once again on the floor and made good speed getting around the wood stove and through the kitchen. Oh while i was making the dollies, Rose took a tumble off a stool while painting the wall in the kitchen…Ouch! She ended up with a large scrape and a deep bone bruise but nothing broken thank god.

It was about this time Rose started pitching her plan to shift the living space around. She wanted to place the pool table where the living room and vise versa. I liked the idea, more room for the pool table, more open floor plan, but I just wanted to get the floor down and done before I would give a lot of thought to re-arranging the house. As it turned out we really liked the new floor plan and reset things accordingly. It really loosened the traffic pattern in the room up a lot.

It’s hard to explain the difference in the floor plan and the floors. To say we love it would be an understatement. So far two months later we still love the easy maintainence of them as well as the look and feel. I wish i had taken more in-process photos but hey, I was busy.

The pictures really don’t do the floor justice, and it is so nice to have the floors finished. Not just the job itself but really finished flooring. It was a long time coming.

At this point looking back two months later I think we did it all right. Other than Rose’s fall and my wasted half of day with Home Depot over my defective joint issue (not), and my making of unneeded dollies, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. The Dupont product went together better than expected, looks as expected, and maintainence has been easier than we thought.
Over all with the painting, carpet removal, flooring install , furniture moving, it took about three and a half days to get our 30′ x 40′ room back, but it is back better than ever.

  • Red Sox Parade – 10/30/2007

Well the Red Sox did it again…World Series Champs!
There was no way we were going to miss the parade this time around. We were in Boston around 8:30am and parked at the Museum of Science. I figured this would give us good access without getting stuck in crazy traffic and the walk was only 4 blocks or so from downtown. Keith and Bob were to meet up with us in town and we hang for the parade.

Red Sox Nation is well represented in this photo….
Here the group is heading up to the square where the TV cameras and big screen are set-up. Bob and Keith are to be here waiting for us. This is one instance a cell phone is a wonderful thing. I remember the old days before cell phones, trying for the hook on a day like this and it was next to impossible. I know I am showing my age but i recall life without CDs and IPods too. All we had back then was records and the new cassette tape, 8 tracks were becoming passe. The fax was just starting to be used…image relying on snail mail for business? How did things get done…I digress.

We took up positions along the road on the metal fences that were put up. The crowd was starting to build and people in the high rises were putting GIANT letters in the windows saying Red Sox or Champs. People foolish enough or required to drive up the parade route with normal cars had it tough. People were silly stringing them and throwing donuts, it was nuts. Once the cops showed up thing slowed down a little bit, but the crowd was starting to get huge by this point.

Rose and I slipped away for a coffee and a smoke. Yeah we smoked then. there was this large display of a shirt, so we did the tourist thing and had our picture taken. In reality it was just a way for me to finagle a long public kiss from Rose but don’t tell her. We had to get away from the area because we ended up taking everyone else’s picture for them 2-3 fine but come on, I neared a dozen really quickly.

Rose and I headed back and took up positions with our group, it filled in really quick, 40-60 deep ant least. The cops had arrived and taken up positions. The crowd was tossing tennis balls and most anything back and forth and the one bounced and hit the Sargent…..ooops that was the end of fun time. People still kept tossing things, Keith kicked something back to somebody across the street and one of the cops thought Keith was kicking it at him. He came over really pissed and read Keith the riot act. He told Keith he wouldn’t be able to get a decent job, blah blah blah. We had the video camera out and had just put it away. What a great clip that would have been.
The Duck Boats came by with the players, staff and Wally the Green Monster. Johnathan Papplebon danced a jig with the Drop Kick Murphy’s and Manny was inviting everyone back to his place for a party. It was controlled chaos, and it was fun. It was amazing to see so many people together and the signs that people had were incredible. Everyone has seen signs like “Marry Me Jacoby”, but this was the first time I saw one that said “Fuck Me Jacoby”. The crowd would chant “Yankees Suck” “Resign Lowell” and all kinds of things. There was alot of Dominican flags and signs of support as well. At no time was i worried about the kids or the crowd getting out of hand. Everyone was there for the same reason, to celebrate the World Champion Red Sox and bask in another New York Yankees post season failure. It was great.

After the parade had passed we all went down by Fanniel Hall and people watched, drained the bladders and looked for food. Everything was packed everywhere we couldn’t find a place to eat. We decided to head out of the city so we said goodbye to Keith and Buck and headed back to the Museum for our car. Getting out of the city wasn’t a problem, traffic was moving fine and we headed north for food and home.

I took our video and made a post on YouTube in two parts with music and stuff. I couldn’t get the conversion right so the quality wasn’t what I had hoped it would be. If you search gstadig and or red sox parade you should be able to find them if you want to check them out.
